HC Deb 13 February 1895 vol 30 c692

On the Motion that the House do now adjourn,

MR. G. C. T. BARTLEY (Islington, N.)

pointed out that, after the recent Division, the Chancellor of the Exchequer did not, as was usual under such circumstances, move the Closure in order to terminate the Debate. Were hon. Members, therefore, to understand the Debate on the Amendment of the hon. Member for Dublin County would be continued to-morrow or that it was dropped? He need hardly say that when the Government had decided that the time spent on a Debate had been sufficient, and the House had by a large majority agreed with the Government, the rule was, that the Government should move the Closure and so settle the discussion. If that were not done in this case they ran the risk of the continuance of a discussion which the Government had decided was not necessary, a view which the House had endorsed. Would some Member of the Government say whether the Debate on the Amendment of the hon. Member for Dublin County would be continued to-morrow or whether any steps would be taken to closure those who wished to continue it?

MR. T. M. HEALY (Louth, N.)

said, it was not for the hon. Gentleman to instruct hon. Members in the Rules of the House of Commons. But he rose particularly to express the hope that note would be taken of the fact that the sympathetic Tory Party they were asked to place in Office complained that the Closure was not moved on an Irish Amendment.

MR. T. E. ELLIS (Merionethshire)

said the disposal of the Amendment was not in the hands of the Government, but in the hands of the House.

Motion agreed to.

House adjourned at Ten minutes before Six oclock.
