HC Deb 07 February 1895 vol 30 c212
MR. T. N. A. GROVE (West Ham, N.)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been called to the fact that a Census of the unemployed has recently been taken in West Ham, which shows that out of 44,690 adult workers 9,431 are out of work; and, whether, under the circumstances of extreme distress which prevails, the Government is prepared, pending an official inquiry, to temporarily assist the Local Authorities by granting a sum, in accordance with the precedents adopted with regard to Ireland, equivalent to the amount raised locally by any given Local Authority, so that by means of afforestment and similar methods profitable employment for those in need of work may be provided?

SIR W. HARCOURT

I cannot deal with it apart from other districts.
