HC Deb 04 April 1895 vol 32 cc913-4
SIR MICHAEL HICKS-BEACH (Bristol, W.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether it is proposed to publish Reports on Agriculture, Bounties, and Trade in each of the several countries of Europe and in the United States for the year 1894, similar to the Report recently published with regard to France; and whether, in compiling such Reports, care will be taken to reduce, where possible, foreign money, weights and measures to English, so as to facilitate comparison with English statistics?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir EDWARD GREY,) Northumberland, Berwick

Her Majesty's Representatives abroad have been instructed to furnish Reports on Bounties in continuation of those called for in 1889. Portions of Sir H. Crowe's report are in answer to a request made by the Royal Commission on Agriculture for special Reports on the agricultural position of France and Germany, and on the agricultural position and power of competition in agricultural produce of Russia, the United States, and the Argentine Republic. It is thought that special reports from these principal countries mentioned by the Royal Commission will be sufficient, seeing that the annual reports from Her Majesty's Consuls contain much information on agriculture. Attention will be paid to the conversion of weights, measures, and money.

SIR M. HICKS-BEACH

asked whether reports from Holland, Belgium, and Denmark might be included?

SIR E. GREY

said, he should consider the point.

MR. JAMES LOWTHER (Kent, Thanet)

asked whether reports from South America would be included.

SIR E. GREY

said, the, Argentine would be included.

MR. CHANNING (Northampton, E.)

asked whether there was any idea when the reports would be obtained.

SIR E. GREY

said, the Report from the Argentine would take longer than a report, say, from Belgium.
