§ *MR. J. J. CLANCYI beg to ask the Chief Secretary for Ireland, whether it is intended to construct the proposed Lunatic Asylum at Portrane, county Dublin, of imported concrete, although a few miles distant, namely, at Milverton, near Skerries, there is a practically unlimited supply of excellent stone—and excellent concrete, if required, can be manufactured at Portrane itself; and whether, if the intention referred to is entertained by the Board of Control, he will take instant steps to cause it to be abandoned, and to have it intimated to the Board that all the materials which are required for the building in question, and are available in the county of Dublin at as small a cost as elsewhere, ought to be obtained there?
§ THE SOLICITOR GENERAL FOR SCOTLANDThe Board of Control inform me that the details connected with this new Asylum are still under consideration with the architect, and that it would be impossible at this stage to give information as to the materials to be used in the construction of the building. It is not, however, intended to use "imported concrete" in the construction.
§ *MR. CLANCYIs the hon. Gentleman prepared to make to the Board of Works the intimation I suggest?
§ THE SOLICITOR GENERAL FOR SCOTLANDIn the circumstances, perhaps the hon. Gentleman will be good enough to communicate with the Chief Secretary, or give notice.
§ *MR. CLANCYThe question is on the Paper now.
*THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. J. MORLEY, Newcastle-upon-Tyne), who entered the House at this stage: I am not quite satisfied that I can give the full particulars. The answer which my hon. and learned Friend has given to the question on the Paper is perfectly correct.
§ *MR. CLANCYWill the right hon. Gentleman be prepared to intimate to the Board of Works that the course I suggest ought to be pursued?
MR. J. MORLEYNo, Sir; I cannot answer that off-hand. I am not at all sure that the matter is within my control. I think the Board of Works have control of these matters.
