§ SIR E. ASHMEAD-BARTLETT (Sheffield, Ecclesall)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether Her Majesty's Government can give the House any information as to the recent mutinous conduct of Native troops at Agra, and generally with regard to the reports of disaffection in India?
MR, H. H. FOWLERWith regard to the incident at Agra, I am informed that the insubordination was confined to two companies, was not of a serious nature, and was unaccompanied by violence; and that the Government of India attach no importance to the occurrence, which related to a dispute with Native officers, and was entirely unconnected with caste or religious feeling. I have seen in some of the newspapers conjectures and suggestions with regard to the existence of disaffection in India, but I have received no information which in any way confirms or supports them.
