MR. J. A. PEASEI beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what has been the amount of revenue derived from the clove plantations in Pemba and Zanzibar; what has been the area under cultivation; and what has been the weight of cloves produced during the years 1892 and 1893 respectively?
§ SIR E. GREYReturns as to the Revenue for 1892 and as to the production for that year were given in the Report contained in Africa No. 4 of 1893. The Revenue is there given as 450,237 rupees. The Returns for 1893 are not yet complete, but will be laid in due course. I cannot give the area under cultivation, but information of much interest and detail on the subject of the clove cultivation was given in a Report drawn up by Mr. Fitzgerald, which is to be found in the Commercial Report of 1892, No. 266, Miscellaneous Series.
