§ Ordered, That a Seleet Committee be appointed to inquire and report what results have followed upon the recommendations made by the Select Committee of 1876–7 for the employment of meritorious Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines in Civil Departments of the Public Service; and to inquire whether any and, if so, what further measures are desirable for the purpose of extending the employment of this class in those Departments, and also for helping them to obtain service, to such extent as they may be fitted for it, with private employers of labour.—(Sir G.
