HC Deb 12 June 1894 vol 25 c903
MR. HUGH HOARE (Cambridge, Chesterton)

I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works whether he is aware that the park-keepers exclude the people from a triangular space of ground of about two acres in extent lying in the north part of the Green Park, and extending for about 100 yards westwards from a point opposite Down Street; whether there are any reasons for such exclusion; and, if so, what they are; and if there are no good reasons, whether he has power to order, and will at once order, that the park-keepers be instructed not to keep the people out any more?

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS (Mr. H. GLADSTONE,) Leeds, W.

The ground referred to in the north part of the Green Park is thickly planted with ornamental timber. For the protection of the trees—many of which feather down to the ground—against damage by sheep, and for the preservation of public order after nightfall, I consider that the enclosure must be maintained.

MR. HUGH HOARE

Would not the same object be attained by keeping the railings as they are, and only admitting the public during the daytime?

MR. H. GLADSTONE

I do not think so, Sir; I am afraid I cannot make any change.
