§ SIR S. NORTHCOTE (Exeter)I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board if his attention has been called to the proceedings of the Newton Abbot Workhouse Guardians, as reported in The Western Morning News and Western Daily Mercury of 5th July; and if he can now state what decision the Local Government Board have arrived at with regard to the confirmation of the appointments of the new master, matron, and principal nurse in this establishment?
THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. SHAWLEFEVRE,) Bradford, CentralThe Local Government Board have communicated to the Guardians of the Newton Abbot Union their decision with reference to the re-appointment of the master of the Workhouse; but the Board's letter has not yet been submitted at a meeting of the Guardians, and I think it right that the Guardians should be made aware of the decision of the Board before the effect of it is stated by me in the House. With respect to the office of principal nurse, the Board urged upon the Guardians that they should obtain the services of a person holding a certificate as a trained nurse and also a certificate in midwifery, and I am informed by the Guardians that they have now appointed as head nurse a person who has been recommended by the Workhouse Nursing Association.
