HC Deb 27 July 1894 vol 27 c1145
SIR E. ASHMEAD-BARTLETT (Sheffield, Ecclesall)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he has any information regarding the reported hostilities between China and Japan?

MR. S. BUXTON

(who replied) said: I have been asked to give the following answer to this question: Telegrams have been received from Her Majesty's Representatives at Pekin and Tokio, both dated last night, relative to negotiations for the preservation of peace, so that it is evident that there had been no declaration of war by either side up to that time.
