HC Deb 08 January 1894 vol 20 cc1009-10
MR. W. M'LAREN (Cheshire, Crewe)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been called to the Report of Mr. Swettenham, British Resident in Perak, published in the Reports of the Protected Malay States for 1892, in which he urges that Regulations regarding venereal disease similar to the Contagious Diseases Acts should be introduced into Perak; whether the Government has given any reply to this suggestion; and, if so, what; what are the former references to this subject which Mr. Swettenham says he has already made; and whether he will lay upon the Table of the House any Correspondence which has taken place on the subject?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. S. BUXTON,) Tower Hamlets, Poplar

My attention has been called to the remarks in question. No reply was given to them, as Mr. Swettenham's views had already been laid before and overruled by the late Secretary of State, with whose decision the present Secretary of State agrees. I do not think any particular advantage would be gained by printing the Correspondence; but if my hon. Friend presses for it, and will move for it, it shall be given.
