HC Deb 04 January 1894 vol 20 cc820-1
MR. HOPWOOD (Lancashire, S.E., Middleton)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is now in a position to give the further information respecting the six Zulu prisoners which was promised on 27th November last?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE OR THE COLONIES (Mr. S. BUXTON,) Tower Hamlets, Poplar

Of the five prisoners as to whom I promised on 27th November to give further information, one (Zixibilele) died in prison in February, 1892, and another (Mafukwim) has already been released. Lord Ripon has now further decided, on the Governor's recommendation, that two others (Magehle and Ishwayibe) should be released, but that the remaining one (Mpkwa) cannot be released. The Governor has not vet had time to reply to the inquiry based on my hon. Friend's question of 27th November as to the prisoner said to be missing; but it is probable that the death of Zixibilele explains the matter.
