HC Deb 18 September 1893 vol 17 c1483
MR. HOGAN(on behalf of Mr. T. Curran) (Tipperary, Mid)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has received any Reports that would enable him to state approximately the extent of territory in the New Hebrides that has been either claimed or actually acquired by French Trading Companies?

SIR E. GREY

The claims on the part both of French and British subjects to have acquired land by purchase appear to be remarkably extensive and vague. As a matter of fact, it was stated in 1891 that the area of land being cultivated by French subjects was about 100 acres, and that by British subjects somewhat less.
