HC Deb 14 September 1893 vol 17 c1144
MR. FIELD

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether the Government intend to bring in a Bill enabling the Guardians of any Poor Law Union in Ireland to acquire by purchase, compulsorily if necessary, any laud not exceeding one acre immediately adjoining any existing ancient closed burial ground vested in the Guardians?

MR. J. MORLEY

I am informed by the Local Government Board that, subject to the restrictions contained in Section 174 of the Public Health Act of 1878, and to the provisions of the Board's Rules and Regulations respecting burial grounds, which require that the land shall be of a character suitable for burial purposes, Boards of Guardians already possess, under Sections 172 and 173 of the Act, all the powers suggested in the question.
