HC Deb 24 November 1893 vol 18 cc1706-7
MR. KEIR-HARDIE,

Member for the Southern Division of West Ham, rose in his place, and asked leave to move the Adjournment of the House for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of j urgent public importance—namely, "the widespread destitution among large masses of the working class, due to so many being out of employment, and to the inadequacy of the measures adopted for dealing therewith;" but the pleasure of the House not having been signified, Mr. Speaker called on those Members who supported the Motion to rise in their places, and less than 40 Members but more than 10 having accordingly risen,

MR. KEIR-HARDIE

I ask, Mr. Speaker, that a Division be taken in accordance with the Standing Order.

Question put, "That leave be given to move, That this House do now adjourn."

The House divided:—Ayes 44; Noes 142.—(Division List, No. 331.)

MR. KEIR-HARDIE

I trust the unemployed will now take the matter into their own hands.

* MR. SPEAKER

I did not quite catch what the hon. Member said, but he must abide by the decision of the House.
