HC Deb 23 November 1893 vol 18 c1553
MR. DARLING

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been drawn to a report that on Monday afternoon last a number of Socialists attempted to hold a meeting, of which they had given notice, in Trafalgar Square, and that the police broke up that meeting; had due notice of the meeting been given, by whom, and for what object; and why was the meeting not allowed?

MR. ASQUITH

Under the Regulations, meetings are not allowed except on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank holidays. I am informed that no attempt was made to hold a meeting in Trafalgar Square on Monday.

MR. DARLING

That does not prevent a meeting being attempted.

MR. ASQUITH

There was no attempt to hold a meeting.
