HC Deb 20 November 1893 vol 18 c1271
COLONEL NOLAN (Galway, N.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland if he will grant an inquiry into the circumstances causing and attending the death of the late Mr. Thomas Mooney, of Tuam, from the time of his arrest until he died manacled in Galway Gaol?

MR. ASQUITH

(who replied) said: This matter has formed the subject of a full and careful Departmental inquiry on oath, the proceedings of which I have myself attentively considered, and the result of this inquiry bears out the finding of the coroner's jury, that the prisoner's death was due to natural causes and was in no way connected with any action on the part of the prison officials.

COLONEL NOLAN

Were the relatives of the deceased allowed to be represented at the inquiry?

MR. ASQUITH

I must ask for notice of that.

COLONEL NOLAN

I gave seven days' notice of this question, and previously to that I had written to the Chief Secretary regarding the case.

MR. ASQUITH

The Chief Secretary is indisposed, and I have not the facts before me, so that I cannot answer.
