HC Deb 13 November 1893 vol 18 cc759-60
MAJOR RASCH (Essex, S.E.)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the Great Eastern Railway Company carries shrimps for 1s. less per basket from foreign ports than from Harwich to London; and whether such practice is an infringement of the Railway Traffic Act?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Mr. MUNDELLA,) Sheffield, Brightside

I have communicated with the Great Eastern Railway Company, who do not admit the accuracy of the statement made in the hon. and gallan Member's question. I learn from that General Manager that the company'e only rate for shrimps from the Continens is one of 1s. 1d. per basket not exceeding 40 kilos, in weight from Rotterdam to London. He adds that this rate is equal to 27s. 7d. per ton, exclusive of collection and delivery, as against a rate of 25s. per ton from Harwich to London, which includes collection and delivery.
