HC Deb 08 May 1893 vol 12 cc335-6
MR. E. H. BAYLEY (Camberwell, N.)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the profits of the Civil Service Supply Association, Limited, of Queen Victoria Street, were £46,700 for the year 1891, and that they were exempt from payment of Income Tax because the Association was registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts; whether he can state how many companies of a similar nature and similarly registered make profits of £10,000 and upwards per annum upon which no Income Tax is paid; and whether he will consider the desirability of so amending the law that the profits of such companies may bear their share of taxation?

SIR W. HARCOURT

The hon. Member has been misinformed. The Civil Service Supply Association, Limited, is not exempt, nor is any Society similarly constituted exempt, from payment of Income Tax.
