HC Deb 04 May 1893 vol 12 cc69-70
MR. WEIR

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the development of the fish traffic between Ireland and Holy-head since the recent construction of light railways in the West of Ireland, steps will be taken to provide light railway, or road tram communication, in the Island of Lewis for the purpose of opening out the fishing industry around the island, and placing the food supplies obtainable there within reach of the southern markets?

SIR G. TREVELYAN

I will answer this question. A new fishing harbour is now being constructed on the West Coast of Lewis, and a road is being made from there across the island capable of carrying rails should they be required. At present it would be pre- mature to lay a railway, or until it is seen what impetus is given to the trade by the new harbour and road.
