WHITMORE (Chelsea)I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works whether he has considered the Report of the Director of the National Gallery for last year, and the strong opinion expressed in it that the proposed additions to the National Gallery on land behind it should be commenced immediately; and whether he is taking any steps to carry out his recommendation?
§ THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS (Mr. SHAW LEFEVRE,) Bradford, CentralI have seen the opinion expressed in the Report of the Director of the National Gallery, and I quite admit that the time is approaching for a necessary extension of the Gallery. I am now negotiating with the War Office with a view to obtain for the purpose a portion of the barrack laud at the rear, by exchanging for it a part of the site of Millbank Prison.
