HC Deb 13 March 1893 vol 9 c1844
MR. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)

I beg to ask the Secretary for Scotland whether he is aware that there is only weekly communication by steamer with Ullapool, Aultbea, Poolewe, and other populous districts on the west coast of the mainland of Ross-shire; that transit by road, a distance of upwards of 30 miles, is so costly as to paralyse the fishing industry; and whether more frequent steamer communication, road trams, or otherwise, will be established in these districts?

SIR G. TREVELYAN

The Government are not at present prepared to augment the subsidy given in respect of the experiment now being made as regards steam communication for the benefit of the Western Highlands and Islands. As regards other communications, the hon. Member is also aware that the sum of £3,000 has recently been granted to the County of Ross and Cromarty for the construction of roads and footpaths, and £15,000 for the road across the Tenes, which is in the County -of Ross.
