HC Deb 03 March 1893 vol 9 cc958-9
MR. NAOROJI (Finsbury, Central)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for India whether, on the resignation in this present month of March of Dr. G. Oppert, Professor of Sanscrit in the Madras Presidency College, the Secretary of State for India will recommend the Madras Government to appoint a Native of India to the Professorship in succession to Dr. Oppert, which recommendation will, it is said, be in accordance with the views of the Education Commission?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Mr. GEORGE RUSSELL,) North Beds.

The Secretary of State has already called the attention of the Government of India to the desirability of appointing a Native of India to succeed Dr. Oppert as Professor of Sanscrit, if a Native fitted for the post is available.
