HC Deb 26 June 1893 vol 14 cc56-7
MR. H. HOARE (Cambridge, Chesterton)

I beg to ask the Vice President of the Committee of Council on Education whether, when children are ordered by their teachers to do home lessons, the parents can properly be compelled to provide books or materials for this purpose; and whether, if such compulsion is irregular and improper, he will issue a Circular to this effect?

MR. ACLAND

It is an evasion of the provisions of the Code on this subject to attempt to make any distinction between books for home lessons and books for use in school. No parent is bound to provide books or materials for either purpose. I hardly think a Circular on this point is necessary, but any case of attempted compulsion brought to the notice of the Department will at once be dealt with.
