HC Deb 22 June 1893 vol 13 c1643
SIR T. SUTHERLAND (Greenock)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that, since the imposition of a military contribution of £100,000 per annum on the Straits Settlements, the annual Revenue of the colony has seriously declined, there being a deficit in 1891 of 772,375 dollars, equivalent to £110,300 sterling, and in 1892 of 627,297 dollars, while the estimates for 1893 show a deficit of over £700,000 dollars; and whether, under these circumstances, the Government will consider the advisability of reducing the said military contribution?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir W. HARCOURT,) Derby

The matter is under considertion.
