HC Deb 22 June 1893 vol 13 cc1678-9
MR. HANBURY (Preston)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether a Commission of Inquiry has recently taken evidence on the subject of the herring and other fisheries off the coast of Ireland; and, if so, when it last took evidence, and when the Report will be published?

MR. J. MORLEY

An Inquiry—to which apparently the question of the hon. Member refers—was recently held respecting the mackerel and herring fisheries at Kinsale, in the South of Ireland, and the Report of such Inquiry has been presented to the Lord Lieutenant. The recommendations contained in the Report are now under consideration; but inasmuch as the carrying out of these recommendations would involve legislation, and as the points at issue have reference to the early season which has passed over, no object would be gained by the publication of the Report and evidence at present.

MR. HANBURY

I asked the question in view of the sub-section we are going to discuss. Will the right hon. Gentleman be able to publish it in any form before the discussion takes place?

MR. J. MORLEY

As I hope the discussion will take place to-night, that will be impossible. But I do not think the findings of the Commissioners will raise any point on the sub-section.
