HC Deb 19 June 1893 vol 13 c1312
CAPTAIN NAYLOR-LEYLAND (Colchester)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War what is the amount of the extra pay being now given to the soldiers who are employed in pulling down the huts in the camp at Colchester; is he aware that at the present moment there is a great scarceness of work in that town; and will he state the difference in cost in this instance between civilian and soldier labour?

* THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (Mr. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN,) Stirling, &c.

The extra pay given to soldiers employed in pulling down the huts in Colchester is at the rate of 1d. to 1½d. per hour. It is work well adapted to military labour, and the additional cost of effecting it by civilian labour would be from £3 to £3 10s. per but demolished. I have no information as to the scarcity of work in the town.
