HC Deb 16 June 1893 vol 13 c1185
MR. HORACE PLUNKETT (Dublin Co., S.)

I beg to ask the Postmaster General whether the evidence given in the recent arbitration between the General Post Office and the Dublin Junction Railway Company as to the number of bags of mails which daily pass over the Dublin Junction Railway—namely, an average of 29 bags from Ireland for distribution in Great Britain and of 98 bags from Great Britain for distribution in Ireland, is correct; and if so, whether, in estimating the loss which, by the Return lately issued by the Treasury, was shown on the working of the Irish Post Office, the Treasury bad taken into consideration the very much larger number of letters and other postal packets sent from Great Britain to Ireland than sent from Ireland to Great Britain?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir W. HARCOURT,) Derby

I will answer this question. I can only say that the evidence referred to constitutes no guide as to the total amount of the correspondence between Great Britain and Ireland.
