HC Deb 02 June 1893 vol 13 c39
MR. T. M. HEALY

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland by what authority the County Inspector of Royal Irish Constabulary, Louth, recently transferred from Clare, refused to allow his men to wear their beards, contrary to the option hitherto allowed in the Force?

MR. J. MORLEY

The County Inspector states that on the occasion of his recent inspection of the Constabulary he directed the men to comply with the terms of the Regulation which, in the matter of hair, whiskers, and beards, requires that where these appendages are worn they shall not be of undue length. This is the only foundation for the allegation in the question; and it is not true he has deprived the men of the privilege of wearing beards.
