HC Deb 10 February 1893 vol 8 c1043
MR. SETON-KARR

I beg to ask the Secretary for Scotland whether, in view of the favourable Report of Her Majesty's Commissioners, appointed to carry out a scheme of colonisation in the Dominion of Canada, dated 29th April, 1892, it is proposed to further continue or extend the said scheme; and, if so, to what extent, in what manner, and at what time; if not, what are the reasons for not extending or continuing the said scheme?

SIR G. TREVELYAN

The intention of the Board of Colonisation early in last year had been to continue the emigration of Canada. Posters were distributed, in English and Gaelic, explaining the scheme and inviting applicants; but by November no applications whatever had come in from the congested districts in the West of Scotland which Parliament had in contemplation when it voted the money, and from which the previous emigrants had been drawn. Under these circumstances, the Government did not proceed with the scheme this winter.

MR. SETON-KARR

Are there any funds still remaining available for the purpose?

SIR G. TREVELYAN

Yes, about £10,000, which runs on from year to year.
