HC Deb 06 February 1893 vol 8 c543
MR. BILL (Staffordshire, Leek)

I beg to ask the Postmaster General whether he has considered the Memorial recently presented to him by some of the inhabitants of Bradley Green, against the removal of the post office from the High Street; whether Ito is aware that the newly appointed Postmaster in that town is the local Liberal agent; and whether it is in accordance with the regulations of the Postal Service for Postmasters to take an active part in local politics?

THE POSTMASTER GENERAL (Mr. A. MORLEY,) Nottingham, E.

I have received the memorial to which the hon. Member refers, and I have also received a numerously signed memorial in support of the proposed removal of the post office at Bradley Green. From the information at present afforded me, the position of the new Sub-Postmaster's premises appears to me to be sufficiently central to satisfy the requirements of the Department and the convenience of the public. I was not aware that the new Sub-Postmaster at Bradley Green was the local Liberal agent; but if he be so, he will have to give up the agency, Post Office servants, and especially Postmasters, being precluded by the regulations from taking an active part in polities.
