I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade if the charges for the conveyance by rail of cattle, sheep, and pigs from railway stations other than those situated at towns of import, have been on the whole cheapened or increased by late regulations?

I must remind the hon. Member that what was done by the Acts confirming the Provisional Orders was to fix maximum charges and not actual charges. At present, the actual rates to be charged by the railway companies are under the consideration of the general managers, and it is not possible for me to say generally whether the inland rates for the conveyance of live stock are or are not less than they were. In the interests of the railway companies, as well as the traders, I sincerely trust that there will be an ultimate reduction
