HC Deb 29 December 1893 vol 20 c440
SIR E. ASHMEAD-BARTLETT

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the great importance of British interests at Rio de Janeiro, and of the recent increase in the strength of Foreign Squadrons now stationed there, Her Majesty's Government will increase the British Naval Force at Rio?

SIR E. GREY

Her Majesty's Squadron at Rio de Janeiro has been recently strengthened by the substitution of the Barracouta for the Basilisk, and the Racer for the Magpie. It now consists of the Sirius, Barracouta, Racer, and Beagle, and it is considered unnecessary to further reinforce it at the present moment.
