HC Deb 05 December 1893 vol 19 c481
MR. GOSCHEN (St. George's, Hanover Square)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for India what is the amount of Council Bills that have been sold by the Government of India since the closing of the Indian Mints to the free coinage of silver on ,26th June, 1893, and what were the figures during the corresponding period of 1892?

MR. GEORGE RUSSELL

From June 27 to December 5 bills have been sold to the amount of Rs.1,48,57,751, producing £954,287. During the corresponding period in 1892 bills were sold to the amount of Rs.9,92,99,106, producing £6,175,397.

MR. GOSCHEN

Can the hon. Gentleman state under what authority the India Government is now borrowing by the system of Treasury bills in the European market? I have seen a statement that it has borrowed £500,000.

MR. GEORGE RUSSELL

It is by the Acts of 1877 and 1879.
