HC Deb 04 December 1893 vol 19 cc350-1
MR. J. E. ELLIS (Nottingham, Rushcliffe)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for India whether, having regard to all the circumstances of the case, he will consider the desirability of making the official notes of the evidence given before the Opium Commission open to the public?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Mr. GEORGE RUSSELL, North Beds.)

This Matter is one which the Secretary of State has no power to decide, being entirely within the discretion of the Commission. The Secretary of State is not aware of the intentions of the Commission in respect of the evidence now being taken in India; but he has been informed that they have no objection to the publication of the evidence taken in England, before their departure for India, and it will be laid on the Table if my hon. Friend will move for it.
