MACGREGOR (Inverness-shire)I beg to ask the Secretary for Scotland whether, in conjunction with the Vice President of the Council, they would consider the expediency of introducing into the Education Code a compulsory course of swimming lessons between the ages of 10 and 14, and thus prevent in a short time the loss of many lives from bathing and other causes?
§ SIR G. TREVELYANI am prepared, when the Code is next under revision, to make such change as will permit of instruction in swimming being recognised as an alternative to military drill, and to count as a school attendance.
