HC Deb 14 August 1893 vol 16 c139
MR. MACFARLANE (Argyll)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can give any account of the causes which have led to the second bombardment of Vitu, and why a number of British officers have been sent to Uganda?

*THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir E. GREY,) Northumberland, Berwick

I have seen the reports in the newspapers with regard to the bombardment of Vitu, but we have had no information on the matter at the Foreign Office. With regard to sending additional officers to Uganda, it has boon stated in the Press that they were sent to take charge of the country. That is not the case. They are sent to take charge of the Soudanese troops, without prejudice to the question of the future occupation of the country. In fact, we have not yet received any Report from Sir Gerald Portal as to the best method of dealing with the country.
