HC Deb 11 August 1893 vol 16 c13
MR. BROMLEY DAVENPORT (Cheshire, Macclesfield)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he has any reason to believe that in the case of imported foreign joinery the mark imposed under the Merchandise Marks Act is frequently ! planed out; and, if so, whether he can devise any means for preventing such an evasion of the Act of Parliament?

MR. MUNDELLA

Neither the Board of Trade nor the Commissioners of Customs, whom I have consulted, have received any information upon this subject. If any evidence as to the fraudulent sale of such goods is brought to my notice it shall be carefully considered. There is no obligation to mark these or any other goods.
