HC Deb 22 March 1892 vol 2 c1442

Considered in Committee.

(In the Committee.)

[Mr. JACKSON in the Chair.]

Motion made, and Question proposed, That it is expedient to authorise the repayment of the sum of Two thousand four hundred pounds deposited as security for the completion of the Railway authorised by the Eyemouth Railway Certificate, 1884, under the provisions of 'The Railways Construction Facilities Act, 1864,' and which is now forfeited or liable to be forfeited, together with any interest or dividends thereon.

DR. CLARK (Caithness)

What is the object of repaying this money? Is it not now forfeited? Why should the money be given back to the Railway Company?

MR. CALDWELL (Glasgow, St. Rollox)

This is a mere matter of form. According to the Act this money will be liable to be forfeited, and it is arranged in such cases as a perfectly legal transaction that the money should be refunded. It has the approval of the authorities.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolution to be reported To-morrow.
