§ MR. MACARTNEY (Antrim, S.)Having reference to the same subject, I beg to ask the right hon. Gentleman a question of which I have not been able to give notice, but which perhaps he can answer off-hand: Whether, having in view the possibility of conflicts arising between rival political parties in Ireland during the forthcoming Parliamentary elections, the Government will take special care that peaceable citizens who desire to record their votes shall have all necessary protection in doing so?
§ MR. MADDENIf my hon. Friend requires information as to any specific occasion it will be necessary for me to make inquiry; but, of course, it is the duty of the Government and those responsible for the peace of any district during the elections to take care that the peace is preserved, and to the best of their ability this duty will be carried out.
