CLARKI beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury why there has been so much delay in filling up the office of Comptroller of Stamps and Taxes in Scotland, caused by the retirement, on 7th April last, of Mr. Crawford; whether it is the intention of the Government to appoint to that important office someone outside the Department, or to promote to it the officer next in rank who has every qualification for the office; and whether it is proposed to abolish this office, or to transfer the office to a London official?
