HC Deb 10 June 1892 vol 5 cc691-2
MR. HOYLE (Lancashire, S.E., Heywood)

I beg to ask the Postmaster General if the new regulation as to the re-directing of letters applies to letters directed to persons in Great Britain who have gone abroad for temporary purposes; and if a letter not exceeding half-an-ounce in weight can be forwarded to the Continent or other country in the Postal Union by adding to the cancelled penny stamp a stamp for three halfpence, or whether the full rate of twopence halfpenny will be required in addition to the penny stamp cancelled?

THE POSTMASTER GENERAL (Sir JAMES FERGUSSON,) Manchester, N.E.

The new regulations do not affect any letters re-directed abroad. In the case which the hon. Member puts of an inland letter not exceeding half-an-ounce in weight and bearing a penny stamp, the additional charge on re-direction to a country in the Postal Union has long been, and will still be, three halfpence, that is the difference between the foreign and the inland rate.
