HC Deb 25 May 1891 vol 353 c969
MR. CAUSTON (Southwark. W.)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the Departmental Committee on the new designs for the coinage will make its Report?

MR. GOSCHEN

The Committee on the Design of Coins will not make any Report at present. It was proposed by the Committee that eight artists should be invited to send in designs for the sovereign, half-sovereign, crown, half-crown, florin, and shilling. This proposal was approved, and invitations were issued to the selected artists on March 17 last, together with copies of the conditions which had been prepared by the Committee—all designs to be delivered to the Deputy Master of the Mint on or before October 31st next.

MR. CAUSTON

What is to be done in regard to the four shilling piece?

MR. GOSCHEN

The Committee, I understand, recommend the withdrawal of that coin.
