HC Deb 25 May 1891 vol 353 c961
MR. PICTON (Leicester)

I beg to ask the Postmaster General if he is aware that the limitation of the postal privileges of British soldiers in India to letters prevents their regular receipt of newspapers from home with the news of their native districts; and whether there is any insuperable difficulty in the way of making the postage of a newspaper to a soldier in India at least as cheap as that of a letter?

THE POSTMASTER GENERAL (Mr. RAIKES,) Cambridge University

I believe it is the fact that the postal privileges to British soldiers in India are limited to letters and do not extend to newspapers. I am afraid that it is not possible to meet the suggestion of the hon. Member without a Parliamentary enactment.
