HC Deb 09 June 1891 vol 354 c14
ADMIRAL MAYNE (Pembroke and Haverfordwest)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Admiralty whether it is the case that the uniform of the officers of the Royal Navy is about to be changed; and whether such change would involve officers in considerable expense; and, if so, whether any sufficient reason has been shown for inflicting such a hardship upon them?

THE FIRST LORD OF THEADMIRALTY (Lord G. HAMILTON,) Middlesex, Ealing

Certain alterations in the uniform of the officers of the Royal Navy are under consideration. The object of the proposed changes is to reduce the number, and consequently the cost, of the uniforms now authorised. A saving rather than an addition of expense will be effected by the changes under consideration.

ADMIRAL MAYNE

Does the noble Lord refer to changes in the future or at present?

LORD G. HAMILTON

If changes are adopted in the future, the cost to officers will be less in the future than it is at present.
