HC Deb 04 June 1891 vol 353 cc1601-2
MR. STERN (Suffolk, Stowmarket)

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether an inquiry under "The Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890," as to whether there is sufficient and decent accommodation for labourers in Ixworth, Suffolk, is to be held on 15th June; whether this is the first inquiry in a rural district under the Act; and whether the Local Government Board will send an Inspector to assist the labourers at the Inquiry?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. RITCHIE,) Tower Hamlets, St. George's

I believe that the County Council of West Suffolk has determined that an Inquiry shall be held under the Act referred to, and that it will be the first Inquiry of this character under the Act. The Local Government Board do not propose to send an Inspector to assist at the Inquiry. It would be entirely opposed to the practice of the Board to intervene in the Inquiries which are held by County Councils; and I think that it would be very inexpedient that they should do so.
