HC Deb 01 June 1891 vol 353 cc1381-2
MR. J. NOLAN (Louth, N.) for Mr. GLANCY (Dublin Co., N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether the labourers and artisans in the employment of the Board of Works in the County and City of Dublin are paid less than the ordinary rates of wages at present prevailing in that district for those two classes of workmen respectively; and, if so, whether he will direct that the wages of the employés of the Board of Works referred to be increased, so as at least to make them equal with the wages paid by private firms?

SIR H. MAXWELL (for the SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Jackson,) Leeds, N.

I learn from the Board of Works in Ireland that they have no exact information as to the rates of wages paid by private firms in Dublin, but that they are of opinion that, looking to the conditions and the constancy of employment given by the Board, the wages of the men employed by it compare favourably with those paid by private firms.
