HC Deb 26 February 1891 vol 350 c1694
MR. LABOUCHERE

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether the young person who was sentenced last week to 21 days' imprisonment at Cambridge, for leaving the "Spinning House," is still in confinement, or whether she has received a free pardon?

MR. MATTHEWS

I have communicated with the learned Judge, and he informs me that he sees no reason to doubt the propriety of the original committal to custody from which this girl escaped. Looking to the fact that her escape was mainly due to the negligence of the assistant matron, I have come to the conclusion that the remainder of her sentence may properly be remitted. I am in communication with persons of position at Cambridge, who will, I hope, do her real service and assist her to a different course of life.

MR. LABOUCHERE

Do I understand that this girl will be set at liberty at once?

MR. MATTHEWS

The order for her release will be issued to-morrow.

MR. LABOUCHERE

Am I to understand that the liberty of the girl will not be dependent upon her entering into any conditions?

MR. MATTHEWS

No, Sir.
