HC Deb 23 February 1891 vol 350 cc1463-4

Considered in Committee.

(In the Committee.)

Clause 1 agreed to.

Clause 2.

Amendment proposed, in page 1, line 24, to leave out from the word "Where," to the word "borough, in line 25 inclusive, and insert the words— Section Four of 'The County Electors Act, 1888,' shall be deemed, to have applied Section Thirty of 'The Parliamentary and Municipal Registration Act, 1878,' to a parish situate in a Parliamentary but not in a Municipal borough, and to have provided that."—(Mr. Knowles.)

Question proposed, "That the words proposed to be left out stand part of the Clause."

MR. H. J. WILSON (York, W.R. Holmfirth)

I beg to move that we do now report Progress.

MR. LEES KNOWLES (Salford, W.)

I hope the hon. Member will not press his Motion. The object of the Bill is simply to remove a doubt on a technical subject, and this Amendment is intended to meet a point suggested by the right hon. Gentleman the Member for Wolverhampton in an Amendment which he has proposed to the Registration of Electors (Acceleration) Bill. The Bill contains only two clauses.

MR. J, E. ELLIS (Nottingham, Rushcliffe)

I think the very fact of absence of the right hon. Member for Wolverhampton is a reason for reporting Progress.

MR. LEES KNOWLES

I have no wish to press the Amendment, and I proposed it chiefly in deference to the opinion of the right hon. Gentleman the Member for Wolverhampton.

MR. CREMER, (Shoreditch, Haggerston)

If the Bill is of the brief and non-contentious character indicated by the hon. Member in charge of it, there can be no objection to two or three days' delay.

Committee report Progress; to sit again to-morrow.
