HC Deb 27 April 1891 vol 352 cc1486-7
MR. SEXTON

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can state what decision has been arrived at with reference to the alterations at Belfast Gaol?

SIR E. HARLAND (Belfast, N.)

I beg also to ask the right hon. Gentleman if anything has yet been decided as to the removal back or otherwise of the portion of new wall in front of the prison in Belfast?

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

The matter is still engaging the careful attention of the Government, and. they are not without hope that the question at issue will be settled by the acquisition of more land.

MR. SEXTON

Will the right hon. Gentleman bring the power of the Irish Executive to bear upon the matter, and have it determined in one way or the other before the Vote comes on.

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

It is not so simple a matter as the hon. Gentleman supposes. My attention has been drawn to the subject by the Prisons Board; but there are many difficulties in the way of settling it offhand. I have taken great pains about it.
